Why Run?
Currently 13% of DC residents are uninsured, mostly in areas with a
high concentration of poverty, and racial and ethnic minorities.
Further, DC has some of the worst health problems in the country, with
the third highest rate of diabetes, 10x the national average of AIDS
cases and 2x the national average of infant mortality. The HOYA Clinic currently provides over 1,300 DC residents (without
insurance and with no other means of payment) with primary health
services, specialty services, such as reproductive health care and
prenatal care, and HIV/AIDS testing and counseling. Over the past two
years, the Georgetown 5K Run has raised over two thousand dollars for
the clinic, helping it expand and improve its facilities and services
to effectively help more patients.
